Art created in attempt to join two worlds is perhaps the greatest form of creation. La Bicicleta is a project through El Acercamiento that attempted to portray the public of Cubas ability to create from necessity while connecting us on a deeper level of humanity. Realizing something that holds so much cultural significance to an entire community holds similar if not equal significance to me and to people around the world, allowed me to create a project where the focus was not simply just on the politics of Cuba and America, but on the people and the similarities we share. For the project, I created a bicycle entirely out of cardboard to symbolize the ability to create from necessity and spoke with random people on the street about the significance a bicycle has in their life as I walked through the streets of Havana, Cuba to the gallery Fabrica De Arte. Throughout the undertaking of this project people shared both simple and complex answers. Of them my favorites included a bike being the connection to friends, the connection to community, and my favorite, a bike being a member of the family.
